Presented by Mike McNulty, CEO of the Stagecoach Charitable Trust, this award goes to a young person who, despite adversity, has nevertheless achieved a level of success. This could be in academic studies, sport or the arts despite personal accident, injury, illness bereavement, tragedy or disaster.
The Winner was 16 year old, Harry Bowen from West Bergholt, Essex.
In June 2007, whist on a school trip, a huge tree branch fell on Harry and three of his friends, his best friend Daniel sadly didn't survive. Harry suffered severe injuries, dislocated hips, broken pelvis, internal bleeding, nerve damage, kidney failure. Harry endured numerous operations, suffering both physical and mental pain.
Despite all this he is doing well at school, finds time to act as a reading coach to help others, and is a school prefect and vice house captain, He has appeared in several school productions, plays Wheelchair basketball and works one night a week at Hospital Radio at Colchester. Harry is a truly inspiration young man.
Highly Commended in this category, Beth Woodford from Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
Beth has suffered an undiagnosed medical condition for the last two years, where she can faint up to three times a day. This means she is unconscious for several hours a day. The risk of this happening has denied her some of her childhood and catching up on school work can be a struggle. Despite her disability, Beth was elected Head Girl at school and has performed well in her Highers exams, gaining 2A's and 3B's. Without doubt she has been very brave in the face of adversity.
