Bravery Award Winner 2011
Presented by Nigel Lindsay. this award recognises young people who have been involved in acts of personal courage and selflessness.
The Winner was 10 year old, Jessica Lucia Magnus, from London.
In 2005, aged four, Jessica was diagnosed with a stage 3 Ganglioneuroblastoma, a part cancerous and part benign tumour on her spine, she underwent six gruelling courses of chemotherapy at great Ormond Street Hospital, followed by nine hours of surgery. Only part of the tumour could be removed, this left her with scoliosis/curvature of the spine resulting in her having to wear a body brace for 23 hours of a day, for five years. Despite all this, she regularly attends Stagecoach, sings in St Luke's Choir and continues to shine.
Highly Commended in this category is 5 year old, Lucie Russell from Darlington.
Lucie was diagnosed with Leukaemia just after her third birthday. She endured chemotherapy every day for two and a half years –with a double dose on Fridays. The treatment caused severe nerve damage which meant she couldn't be touched. Thankfully she has now been given the all clear and has just started at Stagecoach, which she loves. Lucie never stops smiling and is uncomplaining and cheerful at all times.
